A unique music education program for everyone who wants to know more about jazz
The objective of the program is to give high school students (and now, also the general public) the opportunity to experience live jazz performances by some of Australia’s leading groups in a jazz club atmosphere and best of all, ask questions of the bandleader and musicians to demystify any aspect of jazz you want to know more about: composing music, creating on-stage rapport between players, how to become a professional musician, and much more...

PLUS! Every participant gets program notes and a free compilation CD!

  • Concerts held aytime on Thursdays
  • 11.00am - 3.00pm bands performing one 50 minute set + Q&A about 30 mins each band
  • First set: 11.00 - 12.30 (incl Q&A)
  • LUNCH: 12.30 - 1.30pm (BYO)
  • Second set: 1.30 - 3.00pm (incl Q&A)
  • Quality educational resources: Accompanying program brochure/notes and compilation CD

Two of our 2012 Artists in Transition headliners showcase the skills and music that has already seen their careers soar. Experience two young jazz bands on the rise and ask them lots of questions as they have travelled and performed widely and achieved a great deal already.

Jo Fabro is an exciting young jazz singer/songwriter who has released a susccessful soul album and is now exploring jazz further with her creative quintet.

The Vampires are an original improvisational jazz ensemble blending soulful jazz, old-school reggae and South American music.

Be Bop & Beyond: The Coffin Brothers & Bernie McGann Quartet

Characterized by fast tempo, instrumental virtuosity and improvisation based on the combination of harmonic structure and melody, bebop goes a step further with these two key Australian bands, one led by alto legend Bernie McGann, who celebrates his 75th birthday this year and the other by high-energy tenor player Sean Coffin.

• The opportunity to experience some of the things they are learning about in practice: chords, tonality, harmony, melody, composition, interaction between musicians, improvisations
